We haven't been able to isolate what might be the cause of your issue. Does this problem happen for all TFS projects? Have you tried reproducing this on a different computer but with the same TFS project?
Using this screen to set the current iteration is not required as it is just meant to be a convenient way to get started using WIM as many of the features take advantage of the iteration dates. Another thing you can try when opening this project is to choose not to set a current iteration right away and instead use the Iteration Schedule screen to give dates to your iterations.
